“Children living in poverty are at greater risk for violent
crime….Children in poor families are still six times as likely
as those in wealthier families to drop out.”
(Time Magazine, July 26, 2004)
When kids drop out of school, it affects all of society because
they end up getting government assistance in some form: medical,
food stamps, or general relief funds. Or they turn to a life of
crime, which ends up costing even more. The Oasis offers:
- Opportunity for kids to use computers with specialized tutoring
software
- Staff and volunteers who encourage academic achievement while
providing help with homework, reading, and math skills (since
many parents do not speak English and are unable to help with
homework and now schools are doing away with ESL classes.)
- Opportunity for teen volunteering to develop good work ethics
and job skills while inspiring younger children and teens
“The education of youth is an employment of more consequence
than making laws and preaching the gospel, because it lays the foundation
on which both law and gospel rest for success.” Noah
Webster (American Magazine, March 1788)
